The "Mehr Leben" foundation aims to realize the "oase.kleinbasel" project by 2027. The aim is to create a place that welcomes families with terminally ill children and offers them a break from their difficult everyday lives.
This bachelor's thesis contributes to the spatial design of the entrance area and its visualization. The children's perspective, which was brought in through workshops, is important here. The spatial planning was visualized using augmented reality in order to make it understandable for everyone involved at such an early stage.

"Entrance to the oasis" is a visualization of the children's needs and wishes. Shows an intermediate stage in the planning phase for the "oase.kleinbasel" project in collaboration with the children from the "Rotchäppli" daycare center and the "Mehr Leben" foundation.

This bachelor thesis was nominated for the Alumni 2024 award.

Welcome zone:
The entrance door fulfills several functions. On the one hand, it should convey the impression of a family home and at the same time be lockable. This security measure is necessary as patients from the neighboring care center "dandelions" (care center for people with dementia) could wander out into the shared garden and get lost in the city.

Waiting area:
This is where everyone can first arrive and recover from their journey with a coffee, tea or soft ice cream.

Air space:
The air space is a cylindrical space made of glass that runs through all floors. It is designed to transport daylight from above to below so that family members can see each other from the different floors. A special feature is the water that flows along the glass wall and ensures a fresh indoor climate.

small play zone:
This zone is equipped with a marble run that stretches across the entire wall and invites children to linger.

large play area:
The central element is the tree with its cave, which can serve as a retreat for the children. In addition, there are other play options such as 2 swings, various books and board games, painting utensils, lots of cuddly toys and cushions. The light in this part of the room is refracted by a picture window, which has a positive effect on the atmosphere.

Journey Map
A family rings the doorbell. One of the employees opens the door and welcomes them. There is a lot to discover when they enter. The tree in the middle is the first eye-catcher. Its crown, which stretches across the entire room, draws the eye to the other zones in the room. Family members can move freely around the room and settle in for the time being.
